The only worrisome thing to me is that Ohtani's arm might be compromised now as a pitcher.
He can still hit, but how effective of a pitcher will he be since that injury?

Yeah I did, and I still think 700 million dollars is insane to give ONE baseball player, but Ohtani is an exceptional baseball player who if you're going to consider giving that kind of crazy money to a player, it would be him. My excitement is about having him play for the Dodgers. Very similar to my reaction back in the summer of '96 when I found out we signed Shaq for over 100+ million dollars. I don't remember the specific player you are referring to but I think it was Jaylen Brown for the supermax.....but I could be mistaken. The reason for my gasp is that whatever crazy amount it was, I don't think Jaylen was worth that much, but at the same time I understand that the economic landscape of the league allows players who may not be "worth" it based on their play to earn that kind of money today. |

So get this.
Shohei's contract defers $680 million out of the $700 million until after the 10-year contract period.
Meaning he technically only gets paid $2 million per year for 10 years by the Dodgers.
The Dodgers do have to pay a "competitive" tax that goes to other teams, but that amounts to around $40 million per year. That's, I think, based on the Dodgers entire salary structure per year and not just because of Shohei's contract.
So in otherwords, the Dodgers still remain way under the 2nd luxury tax threshold and may not even be hitting the first tier either.
They can sign one or two more stars aggressively if they want to.
It's been called THE most team friendly contract is professional sports history.
I don't even think the contract requires the deferred salary to gain interest over the years it's going to be paid out, so Shohei is taking a "hit" if you can call it that.
AND, this was apparently all suggested by Shohei. The Dodgers were prepared to offer him a straight up contract, but he didn't want to hamstring the teams ability to build a winner around him.
The Dodgers can easily set aside the Shohei money that is owed, invest in some safe US bonds, and have that money and more to spare to pay him ten years from now. And the money the Dodgers will rake in on ticket, merchandise, marketing, and other revenue streams will probably pay for his entire contract in a year or two.
Fantastic.
Now they just need to get rid of Roberts and get a pitching staff.

The $46M per year is the "luxury tax salary" during the first ten years of the deal, as opposed to a straight up $70M per year. This is huge.
Apparently under these deferred comp deals, teams are still required to deposit an amount into escrow each year based on net present value calculations, in order to ensure the money will be there to pay out the deferred salary down the road. That annual escrow deposit, along with the $2M current salary (lol), makes up the luxury tax salary amount.

No amount of talent will fix not knowing how to manage in the playoffs. Don't get me wrong, I want him gone. But they have already approved him to come back for this season. The only reason I am excited for the season is Ohtani. I can easily see them losing in round one again, and would have to believe they will finally fire him if that happens. If they somehow win it, they will not fire him. Sadly that is the situation. |
