I think they both will be huge x-factors for our success... but as much as I may cringe whenever Artest takes a shot, I still think we can overcome that weakness and manage to win key games. On the other hand, Gasol turning soft on us again (mentally, physically, or in any other newly invented ways) would basically put the nail in our team's coffin. It's like losing a guy to injury, but keeping him out on the floor because you need him. It would be very hard, if not impossible, to overcome that. Artest can still help the team in other ways when his shot is not falling... but Gasol helps us in no way when he's in his shell.
So I have to go with Gasol this time. He's the number 1 x-factor for us this season, between the two.

C: What Nash has left and how he can fit into a more structured offense. By far my biggest worry

I'm not really too concerned about either although the Gasol thing bothers me much more.
Ron is streaky, we all know that and when he brings it we're usually firing on all cylinders.
But when Pau turns into Pussy Pau... I don't even know what to say. He may as well not even be playing because he becomes a detriment to the team on both ends. But I'm less concerned now because we have Dwight. He'll command even more attention than Bynum and he's so much quicker that I don't see the mollasses log jam in the paint this season like the last 2 years. Bottom line is we'll be even less dependent on Pau now; he's pretty much gravy.
My biggest concerns are Nash's back and Kobe's knee.

The idea of Pau being "gravy" now, does sound good in comparison... although, 19-20 million dollar per year gravy is still a bit disappointing. Our gravy guy is getting paid more than Lebron and CP3... at that price, I'd rather eat the mash potatoes by itself. But hey, it's not my money so let's see where it takes us.

It's true, he's an expensive gravy but on Buss' tab so I'll take it.
That said, he better be the most savory gravy ever or his ass should be shipped out.

Ship Pau out? Very hard to get equal value for him. Only team that comes to mind for him is all the Atlanta rumors

But what's equal value if he's not playing up to par? Can't keep acting like he's 2009 Pau worth the 19M a year they're paying him if he doesn't perform.
I don't think it'll come to that point this season but possibly next season when he is an expiring contract.

Pau is still the best post up PF in the game. Equal value would be Lakers still have at least the same chance of winning. He'd likely be in a multiple player trade
Biggest rumor is involving Josh Smith for obvious reasons but I don't think he's worth a straight up swap even if salaries aligned

2 straight years of 12 points on 43% in the post prove otherwise. I can't in good faith ever call him the best anything with how he performs under duress and with defenses zeroing in on him until he proves otherwise.
