Lets assume Kobe retires as he says he's planning after his contract is up and Dwight resigns at some point.
Steve Nash is the only player under contract for 2014 and he could very well retire before then.
That leaves LA with money to spend and a player to build around. Who's FAs this year? Well it could be time for LeBron to look for a new home as Wade is injury prone and will turn 33 that season and he'll be a FA as well if they want to move the pairing.
Other FA's or those with opt out clauses include: Melo, Amare, Granger, Deng, etc
LA could try to be players in this rich FA class. Could also help extend and bring back a Kobe and Pau on the short term if they see help coming

Lets assume Kobe retires as he says he's planning after his contract is up... Well, that's tough for me to do... because I really, really think Kobe plays another year or two. I know it's good to plan for the future, but with Dwight re-signed, and his buddy Pau most likely willing to come back for much cheaper (he's grossly overpaid as it is), I think Kobe gives it another go... just to prove he's still got "it". So in reality, we'd be looking for a replacement PG in 2014 and maybe a solid SF that can defend top SF's/SG's, plus take over some of the scoring load. Maybe a few other tweaks here and there, but I don't see this team looking much different in the near future other than than those changes. Personally, I expect Kobe to hang it up around 2016.

Kobe for 4 more years? That's what 21 years in the league or something? He's said he'll play out his contract and then I could very easily see him go overseas. One thing is certain. 2014 is best potential rebuilding year. If Kobe did return it would likely be at a massive pay cut
Potential is there for a super team built around 3+ stars

He entered the league pretty young and didn't play 3 years of college ball (like Jordan). He'll be what... 38 in 4 years? I could see him retiring at 38 if he can avoid serious injury. Overseas does sound tempting... but if Kobe can still play at the NBA level, then he'll most likely play. He can always do overseas later lol.

Kobe seems to have knee problems every year now though. I could see him walk away while still on top and not hang on too long. Can't see him accept a reduced role even if he could still be a 18-20ppg guy

I do not see Kobe retiring in 2014. Probably 2016. He is an adrenalin junkie and his biggest high is when he is on that court at the highest level. If by some chance he does not go on, Gasol leaves and Nash retires I would take Amare and Melo. Hopefully Melo has matured by then and Amare has learned enough from the dream to reach his potential. Maybe we can find a PG and a SG by then.

I just don't see the effort or the passion (on either end of the court) to be the best all around players that they can be. Asian kid off the street came in and showed more heart than they did last season.

Well I did say..." Hopefully Melo has matured by then and Amare has learned enough from the dream to reach his potential." Today I would not want those guys near this team, but if they get their shit together they would be better than Granger or Deng. If those players truth stated were our only choices. I'd like to see if we could still get Paul, but that will not realistically happen unless he signs a one year extension lol. James is a pipe dream and most people know that, but Mitch is a magician and he has pulled a few rabbits out of his hat in the recent past.
But yes I 100% agree with you about Melo and Amare. Today they are bums with talent, maybe something will happen to change that, but of course only time will tell.
