Offense has gotten better over the past month but our defense has gone to shit. We obviously miss Vando who, if given the minutes, would make a big impact, but even so we are far from championship level capable.
Just another sign we don’t have it this year imo.

Not smart defenders. Naz Reed is cooking and they leave him open for easy 3s.Going back to the Kings game they did not force Fox right. Just going through the motions on defense. When they get serious they play pretty good defense. Also, LeBron takes defensive plays off way too much.

it's absolute trash. And it is mostly Ham's doing, Vanderbilt or not. everyone is playing drop coverage, helping where not needed (Reaves has stuck out like a sore thumb in this regard in this game), Lakers are giving up a shit ton of open 3s. Lebron has been awful defensively not boxing out. And I haven't even gotten to Ham's weird ass rotation that had D'lo playing only 14 minutes, Hayes 11, and Bron with an absolutely ridiculous 21 minutes played.

Vando definitely unlocks an elite defensive level this team lacks without him. When he's right he's a game changer for this team.

Anthony Davis became the first player in NBA history to record 25 or more points, 25 or more rebounds, 5 or more steals and 5 or more assists

This is why I ultimately don’t think having Vanderbilt’s presence will significantly help. Yes, the defense will get better but not by much because we don’t have the coach who has the competency to put a sound fundamental team defense and philosophy together that will improve the teams’s overall performance on that end of the floor.

He was getting physically pushed by Reid in iso a bit in the first half but didn’t let that throw his game. He boarded like a monster tonight and still got buckets without having to force it to him. He competed the whole night and delivered.

Yeah not sure if he had a single play ran for him other than a few rolls where he mostly dished it out quickly for an open shot. Couple of those were beauties. Liking his passing more and more. 10 blocks and steals combined for his bday game. Want to see him own Sabonis Jr for his after party on Wednesday tho.

It wasn't really just Vando but the combination of him and AD. We ain't got a dawg like Vando on the roster who can clean glass and be all over the place when AD is doing his job. He also pesters a lot of perimeter players with his defense, something we don't really have without him. Key will be if Ham can utilize him enough if/when they face Denver. Need him to pester Murray like he did in the in-season tourney vs Halliburton.

Refs were swallowing that whistle on a lot of contact.

I do like Vanderbilt's length and ability to bother teams for sure because he is a blessing to have on that floor. Will Ham keep getting in his own way though?

Legit concern. If Vanderbilt isn’t lagging physically then he should be integrated into the rotation with no less minutes than anyone besides Lebron AD DLo and Reaves. The smartest thing would be to start him because Rui is a very capable big man backup who can sub for Lebron and the team keep going. I know Rui is grooving with the starting lineup right now and that’s something to be mindful of but Vando’s defense with compliment the starters better overall and balance the floor. He just has to stay respectable from deep and he’s golden. Ham’s biggest problem is unit management. He’s finally moved Prince to a better suited role but it took more than half a season for him to figure out. Giving him too many players is a problem because he inevitably buries someone and favors someone else despite obvious results / non results on the floor.

Sounds good, but I only worry that if Rui gets relegated back to the bench, that he would once again get buried again. You're right, not only does Ham not know how to manage personnel, but he also doesn't know where to place valuable pieces on a roster. A bad coach having too many gems is a curse dressed as a blessing.

Rui is the one who will suffer most if Vando comes back and gets significant playing time. Logic says that Prince and Cam should be the ones who suffer but with Ham he will undoubtedly mismanage this task. It is his biggest weakness imo.
Between Rui and Vando and Lebron we don’t need anyone else in that 3/4 slot in a playoff rotation. Ham will play Prince and bury Rui guaranteed.
