I do remember Phil saying he never asked Mike to do the amount of things Kobe did. For example when they 3peated with Kobe and Shaq, Kobe was tasked with facilitating/orchestrating the offense, playing 1st team defense, AND being an elite scorer and go-to guy in the clutch.
MJ was capable of this but was never really tasked with it full-time because of roster construction. He had Pippen to help out with some of these things.
On the other hand, MJ never had a Shaquille although he did have some other pieces on his winning rosters that Kobe never had.
When you've coached two of the greatest players to ever lace em up its hard to say one was for sure better than the other and Phil has always done a good job at tap dancing around that question while answering it an honestly as he can at the same time.
I'm glad I got to witness both. There will never be another MJ or Kobe imo.
