To take Ham’s place.
It’s hard to be enthusiastic about more rookie coaches taking the reins on an old veteran team but you also don’t want to miss the boat on a future great coach.
I had been thinking Rondo could turn out to be a great coach based on his innate understanding of the game as a floor general but a recent comment he made I found to be concerning. He said something to the effect that the PG position isn’t what it used to be and that PGs should get back to being pass first players.
I don’t agree with this necessarily being the case at all. Take Denver for example. Their point guard in Jokic, Murray and KCP are shooting guards and their system works just fine. What every team need is a floor general regardless of where they play 1-5, and it appears to be an advantage for your player who does this to be bigger, the bigger the better. In part because of the inherent size / floor vision advantage but also because bigger players struggle mightily defending players their size who can do this.
JJ I know is a new media darling for his articulation and solid offensive knowledge of the game. He talks a good talk but I’m not sure how he will fare as a communicator. Possibly very well but I also thought that of Derek Fosher and Brian Shaw before.
Lebron is clearly tight with JJ so perhaps this will play a factor in the whole equation for the Lakers.

I saw McMenamin in a video specifically mention JJ Redick and... Ty Lue. Ty Lue has a a year left on his Clippers contract and from the way he made it sound, he could be a target.

It is out there that Lue and management have been at odds since October. Who really knows though.

Rondo has gotten into too much trouble with the law, so we can forget him.
JJ.....I don't know about that. Young coach with no experience to take on a veteran team that is in a win now situation. I'd rather see Phil Handy take that role than JJ.
Ty Lue is still under contract with the Clips, so I think it would take a miracle to get him unless there are some things we don't know about that situation that could make it a possibility.

Does tampering also apply to coaches?
If so, the Lakers probably can't reach out to Lue until their season is officially over.
But no one wants to be in a position where both parties don't like each other, and if Lue and management are at odds, better to let them go. I wouldn't put spite out of the Clips toolbox, but they have A LOT of issues not remotely connected to coaching. They got to blow up thay team anyway.
I gotta believe Lebron is pushing for Lue instead of going with a first time coach.

If not JJ, search through the assistants league-wide. Unfortunately, could take a while before their teams are done in the playoffs in some cases: Micah Nori (Wolves) Sam Cassell (Celtics) Charles Lee (Celtics) - warning, came from the Bud tree like Ham Chris Quinn (Heat) David Adelman (Nuggets) Pat Delany (Raptors) etc.

Not sure a rookie coach is the right move. Lue and Spoles with had some coaching experience before being head coaches. JJ has no experience no?
I don't think that's the right move.

I’m pretty sure the hire is going to be JJ.
If he’s in the running it’s because Lebron wants him to be. If Lebron wants him to be, it’s because he believes he can be a great one. He may be wrong about that because it will come down to his communication and ability to adjust on the fly ultimately but it is clear JJ has the mind.
I’m ok with giving him a roll but would strongly advised to hire one of the other senior assistants to be his lead assistant. Don’t be cheap, make them an offer they can’t refuse.

I would be good with JJ and look for a strong lead assistant like H2B mentioned. There are no other options that jump out. No matter who the coach is they will be 2nd guessed.
I think the players would all be on board with JJ.

Mike Krzyzewski has also been rumored, but that seems like a really weird fit.

Mike Krzyzewski has also been rumored, but that seems like a really weird fit. I think he’d be as ideal as it gets. He’s not going to so it really doesn’t matter but a proven champion level coach who has experience coaching the highest level NBA talents which happens to include Lebron and AD would be a godsend for team with a limited fast closing window. His defensive schemes would be top flight and his offense would likely be modernized and effective. And the ever important adjustments, lineups, timeout calling would be Popovich / Phil level. Couldn’t ask for a better option if it were possible. lAll that but he’s a college coach nonsense is bullshit. He’s not Rick Pitino or Billy Donovan.
