It's weird that they've announced the press conference but still won't announce the reason for the press conference, that they've hired a new ocach.

They announced it on X and their website just a little bit ago. Probably agreed to wait until today. Press conference starting in 20min. www.nba.com/lakers/news/los-angeles-lakers-announce-jj-redick-as-head-coach-062424“We are thrilled to introduce JJ Redick as the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers,” said Lakers Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka. “After a thoughtful and thorough search process, I couldn’t be more proud to welcome JJ, his wife Chelsea, and their two sons to the Lakers family. JJ is a fierce competitor and has an extraordinary basketball IQ and understanding of the modern game that will energize players and excite fans. His rigorous analysis will immediately unlock new opportunities for our roster while setting a foundation for player development over the long term. He brings an intense dedication to innovation, advancing the game and staying at the forefront of an ever-evolving league. Beyond his basketball acumen, JJ has a care for people and genuine empathy that are critical for connecting with players today. This is an exciting time for Lakers basketball.”

I do think JJ does in fact have strong understanding of the modern game. That is one of the most underrated facets of coaching at this moment. It’s not always the case but at a time when the games evolution hit the accelerator, it becomes increasingly important to have someone who is keen on those evolutionary changes.
JJ like Steve Kerr before him is a strong X’s and O’s guy who was also a role playing shooter. Part of why Kerr succeeded imo was his vision for the 3p shot, the games most important shot now, because it was something shunned for about 4 generations including by Warriors former coach Jackson. Mark Jackson NEVER would have led Steph and Klay to hit the heights they hit because he had no vision or preference for the shot.
JJ absolutely does and I think he will construct a much better offense for our team. I think Austin could benefit largely and I’m hopeful his use of Anthony Davis will be as a front facing playmaker. Make him handle the ball and pass.

Said he wants AD to be a "hub" 5 and doesn't think AD has been used that way to maximize his abilities.

Not by Vogel who said “post up” and Darvin who said “play with force” and nothing much else.
