This right here is for those who claim that Trump is so patriotic to this country. These words are directly from the man who worked for Trump and was his closest advisor for years--Michael Cohen. The fact that Cohen has lied to Congress doesn't diminish the his credibility in knowing Trump and all the dirty laundry they were a part of and created. "The sad fact is that I never heard Mr. Trump say anything in private that led me to believe he loved our nation or wanted to make it better. In fact, he did the opposite. When telling me in 2008 that he was cutting employees’ salaries in half – including mine – he showed me what he claimed was a $10 million IRS tax refund, and he said that he could not believe how stupid the government was for giving “someone like him” that much money back.
During the campaign, Mr. Trump said he did not consider Vietnam Veteran, and Prisoner of War, Senator John McCain to be “a hero” because he likes people who weren’t captured. At the same time, Mr. Trump tasked me to handle the negative press surrounding his medical deferment from the Vietnam draft. Mr. Trump claimed it was because of a bone spur, but when I asked for medical records, he gave me none and said there was no surgery. He told me not to answer the specific questions by reporters but rather offer simply the fact that he received a medical deferment. He finished the conversation with the following comment. “You think I’m stupid, I wasn’t going to Vietnam.” I find it ironic, President Trump, that you are in Vietnam right now. And yet, I continued to work for him."There's no way a Trump supporter can continue to just close their eyes and just dismiss this as "left wing" media bias unless they are just truly that dumb and naive. We already know he's a racist and con artist but the core fundamental thing his hardcore followers say is that he is a man of "the people" and that he understands and can relate to "the average person" as if Trump ever lived a day in his life with financial struggle . This quote only proves the notion that the only thing Trump is patriotic to is himself. At some point, this has to start chipping away at his hard headed base if not in public at least in private. Particularly the part of his base that have served in the military.

I'm talking about the typical Trump supporters who have drank the Trump Kool-Aid and who think Trump actually cares for them.

Nixon had 30 pct popularity on resignation day. I don't know what Trump's true approval rating is, but I don't doubt they'll continue to support this president. Trump was right when he said during his campaign that he can stand on the streets in New York and shoot somebody and he would still have supporters. I'll give him that. And yeah, what Nixon did was bad, but Trump's shadiness and con far exceeds what Nixon ever did. The difference is, Republicans in congress in the early 70's had more integrity than the ones in congress today.

Do you think it was integrity back then or is the calculus of GOP out if whack now. They just want to save their seat no matter what and strongly believe base is strongly supporting. By some accounts, the top is shrinking and long term they may realize it.

Do you think it was integrity back then or is the calculus of GOP out if whack now. They just want to save their seat no matter what and strongly believe base is strongly supporting. By some accounts, the top is shrinking and long term they may realize it. Well, Nixon certainly had his backers that would support him no matter what as well. At the same time, people on both sides of the aisle were also tired and angry about the Vietnam War too. The release of the Pentagon papers in ‘72 which disclosed how much the government had hidden from Americans in conducting the war under both the Johnson (Democrat) and Nixon (Republican) Administrations was extremely disappointing to many Americans. So back then Sam, people were more unified in the sense that they demanded more honesty and integrity from their elected officials. For sure there was partisanship but not to the level of tribal partisanship we see today in Congress. So to answer your question, I would say there were other external factors going on back in Nixon’s day that forced Americans to take a hard look at their elected officials regardless of what side of the aisle they were on. Second, yes, the calculus of the Republican Party is completely out of whack right now. The main reason being—Donald Trump. Trump wields a very powerful and dangerous influence over the Republican Party—unlike anything we’ve seen before Sam. He has successfully gotten people to appeal to their darker natures or has convinced them to close their eyes to what is so blatantly obvious to us in the name of “well he’s just trying to make America great again”. He’s done this by his rhetoric since his birther comments about Obama back in 2011. In some ways, the election of Obama set in motion the person who we have in the White House today. If we’re honest we know that there were also A LOT of angry people that were upset that a black man was elected not just once but twice as President of the U.S. Donald Trump was the perfect candidate to come along and stoke the fears of these angry people into believing that white people( particularly older whites) were losing their place on the social hierarchy in the U.S. by talking about immigrants from Mexico in such negative fashion and exploiting any tragedy he could for his own political advantage. While some Republican members of Congress distanced themselves from him, the vast majority quickly fell in line when it was apparent he would become the Republican nominee and when he became president for fear they would lose support from the Trump supporters in their base if they spoke out against him. Thus, the reason why they ignore the racist rhetoric he spews, the cheating scandals he’s been involved in, the fact that he still has not released his taxes, and of course the possible collusion with Russia. Granted, it’s not against the law for a presidential candidate not to release his taxes, but the fact that he chose not to should have been alarming to his supporters. It will be another 2 long years of him in office Sammy.

An important factor that will help determine this is how fast Democrats get behind the Democratic candidate running against Trump. Can't afford to have another "Hillary vs Bernie" war in which their supporters went at each other to the point that it hurt voter turnout against Trump on election day. The day the Democracts announce who will be running against Trump is when all differences must be put aside with the goal to stop Trump from winning another term. Period.

Well, they are filling up the clown car with options right now, and I don't see any stand out candidates yet (unless you're a Bernie fan). The party should vet these candidates before they announce their candidacy; this is getting out of control.

Democrats don't need 17 candidates running, they need GOOD candidates running.

Ehh....that’s much to do about nothin. It’s petty stuff and he’s addressing it early enough so it won’t be a bigger issue later in his campaign. And if he did do something that was in fact serious, it speaks contrary to what we have in the White House today where they don’t apologize for anything regardless how vile and offensive it is. I would rather see someone in leadership who is actually willing to own a mistake and move forward than double down on stupidity at all cost so as not to look “weak”.
