Cannon has ruled in Trumps favor in other cases. There is a movement to have her recused from the case, but fat chance that will happen. I mean if Justice Thomas can flaunt conflict of interest rules, what chance is there that some lower level federal judge will seriously consider the same issues differently? The Repubs have played the game masterfully, first gaining state and local legislatures through divisive local political issues (complaints of crime and drugs and affirmative action and reverse discrimination....all code words for uppity minorities getting too big for their britches). This turned into control of the key states and governorships. Then this led to gerrymandering to the extreme, essentially structurally changing the nature of voting (this is how a Democratic state like Texas and Kansas has now become reliability and maybe permanently conservative and Republican). Which then leads to the House and Senate deeply divided because of the now almost even split between Dems and Repubs. Then the unprecedented use of filibusters to essentially break government. Government inaction inevitably favors the Repubs who claim that government is broken and shouldn't be trusted...well it's because they broke it. The final leg was the judiciary. The Repubs use of the filibuster to prevent certain judicial nominees to advance and McConnells unprecedented move to block Obama's choice for Scalia's replacement essentially changed the makeup of the Supreme Court for a generation. And this has borne immediate fruit in the rulings against Roe v Wade and even state control of it own gun regulations for the safety of its citizens (should be a States right issue according to the Repubs until it isnt). People throw up their hands and say "I hate both sides" but that is a false equivalency. The Dems are, if anything, naive and unable to play the political long game like they used to. They fight the wrong battles and mostly amongst themselves. But throwing up your arms and saying government sucks is exactly what Repubs want. They don't want government to work. They want the rich to get rich and control everything and more. They want to powerful to stay powerful and increasingly undemocratic if not outright facist. This is exactly the reaction the Repubs want. They want violent radical fascist to be their foot soldiers in completely eliminating any semblance of ordered and fair government. You doubt me? Listen to Trump's rhetoric when he was arraigned. He openly advocated for violence against the proecutors. You can laugh at that until it happens. Hitler was a joke, until he wasn't. Many of the tools he used are the same tools being used now. We really have to wake up or it will be us. I agree with everything said here. But the highlighted part is what really triggers me. There is always going to be a degree of hypocrisy and both parties being servant to the corporate power structure to a degree, no doubt. However, Trumpism has completely soiled and toxified the Republican Party. All of the culture wars, the out of control lax gun laws, and racist rhetoric are all coming from right wing politicians and the right wing base in this country. At one time, it was shameful to push conspiracy theories, outright lies, and racist rhetoric but now it's normalized and part of the Republican Party playbook in order to get elected or stay in power. The "both sides suck" argument to me makes no sense when you look at the political climate, dangerous rhetoric, and dangerous laws being passed and pushed by Republican lawmakers. I'm not saying the Democratic Party is perfect, but it's nowhere near the toxic cesspool the Republican Party has become. To add to Hack's argument, the Democrats really began to take their foot off the brake when Obama was in office. While he had 8 years in the White House, they largely ignored what was going on in local and state governments where Republicans were winning and building momentum and their coalition. By the time Trump took power, Republicans had taken much power in state governments and began to aggressively gerrymander districts stripping voting power from districts with largely black and democratic voters (I may add with the help of the Supreme Court in the Shelby County vs Holder case in 2013) which struck down the key element in the Voting Rights Act that made it so that southern states could not disenfranchise black voters. It's a big reason why a state such as Florida that was once a swing state has become a pretty solid red state. A state that Obama won in 2008 and 2012. Same with North Carolina. Both parties may not be what people want them to be, but the "both sides suck" argument is lame because at least the Democratic Party is not beholden to a con man and trying to push laws and policies that marginalize minority groups, strip voting rights away from American citizens through insidious tactics, and trying to remove economic safety nets for the elderly. Doesn't sound like "both sides" are equally at fault for what we have going on today, that sounds like "one" side doing the majority of damage. Completely agree on all except the both sides being a "lame" argument. Both sides DO suck and one of those is certainly way worst pandering to a cultist and wrought with hypocrisy and bigotry. However the democrat side is only marginally better. Case in point is city of San Francisco. Absolutely ruined by the so called liberals. A climate where no business can survive and a mass exodus of jobs. Nordstrom, Walgreens, cvs, hometown hq gap, banana republic, old navy, century theaters, whole foods all closed up shop. Hotel owners surrendering massive properties to lenders - see Hilton and park 55. A 350 million skyscraper sold for pennies on $ for 75 million. Open season on thefts and shoplifting and rich neighborhoods hiring private security to protect property due to no police service while poor neighborhoods boarding up doors and windows to stay safe. Prosecutors routinely looking the other way on crime. Wtf is this? Blade runner? Terminator? Apocalypse now? Recently there was a discussion here on an inland empire city heading south towards Temecula going to shit and macarthur park in LA overrun by druggies and thugs. City of San Francisco provides free money to addicts and mentally ill to dodge institutions and shelters and peddle drugs, consume syringes and defecate openly on the streets. All this is paid for through hard working tax payer dollars with endless hikes in taxes with no accountability of spending. If you buy a new home in this state of CA, neither the developer nor the state shoulder the infrastructure cost of building roads, fire stations, police stations, schools, and drainage. They pass it on to the buyer as a "melo-roos" tax above and beyond the property tax which jacks up the property tax from 1.16 to 2 pct in a very high cost of housing state. Then when you go to enroll your kids in the public schools you're paying for in melo roos, they show you their ass and say the schools are impacted and we have no space for u the taxpayer while we accommodate non citizen students from Tijuana crossing into San Diego for a free education at the American taxpayers back. Why? Because It's fkin the liberal way. That's why. So yes while bigotry, nazism and racism is worst, the democrat side is only marginally better and has gone off the deep end as well. No sir. Both sides argument is NOT lame. I'm coming at you above with utmost respect for your viewpoint and from being impacted personally with some of this so called liberals progressive democrat shit. And I'm a registered D. This is not what northern European liberalism is all about. This is a fkin abuse of power and citizenry.

I understand your point of view Sammy and that's why I said the Democratic Party is not perfect either. I'm aware of the cost of living in California and the housing crisis the state is currently mired in. While I get that these conditions also exist in other parts of the country, your examples are mainly legitimate issues that California is facing and they are economic issues. And while the democrats bear some responsibility for the cost of doing business in California, I don't think all of this can be put on the democrats or liberals. These trends are also happening in big cities that are in Republican states as well. Maybe not as steep as California but Nashville is trending in this direction as I speak. While you bring up some fair points, I don't think we'll agree on this due to the differences in our world view. I pointed to more broader issues that affect the country as a whole pushed by right-wing Republicans--the irresponsible gun laws, the culture wars targeting marginalized groups, the accepted racism in the Republican Party, the suppression of teaching accurate American history in public schools, the demonization of immigrants--all things that matter to me as a teacher and an African American man with 3 boys. What you said about how the economic burden of living in California has affected you, as a resident of Tennessee, these are the things that have burdened me. So while the Democratic Party policies may only be a "marginal" improvement compared to the Republican Party to you, it's a colossal difference to me. And our differences in opinion on this subject is fine with me because issues affect people differently because our world view is shaped by our background, education, and very importantly, our life experiences. And of course all this is said with all due respect brother Sammy.

Who still thinks that ecological collapse due to global warming is a hoax? Or a power grab to build a new energy paradigm? Or just the natural cycle of the Earth’s climate. Fucking sheep brained fuckfaces. Go around telling other people they are sheep for believing global climate scientists and their own eyes all because the algorithms in your smartphone know YOU are too stupid to know you are being manipulated by what it feeds you.
It was once believed we had another decade or 2 before we had to act but it is clear that that information was naively optimistic. Action is needed immediately and the next economic collapse of the United States will come at the hands of the spiraling out of control climate. They’ll call it the climate crash because capitalism never prepares for disaster nor does it ever attribute fault to its own inaction. It’s always an external influence that disrupts the streamline of superficial wealth extraction.
We are standing at the precipice of the tipping point of no return right now.

What are these extreme right-wing dummies saying? "We need even less regulation so more people can have guns to get the bad guys!" For sure brother. We are in the midst of a revolution of some sort and the culture wars are indeed in full force. There are people who are buying into mythology in order to preserve power for a constituency that currently holds it. But that power is slipping and that’s why the propaganda is accelerating. How long will that maintain before an irreversible breaking point? A World War would be one but one I think comes after the other shoe drops. When Germany invaded Poland it was in dire straits economically. They were decimated by WWI. There is a balancing act of sorts playing out in the economic realm. Look at the Dow Jones right now, just hit an all time high this week…who here besides greed driven saps believe that means the US is healthy? Like you said with daily mass shootings, millions of homeless, crumbling infrastructure and the working class slammed by a private sector greedflation? You’d have to be an absolute fool to believe it. So while that illusion of economic stability exists things will continue to play out in those mythological terms; America can’t be defeated, we made it through Civil War, Cold War etc. Until it can't. Nothing could be further from the truth because there are faaaaar too many variables beyond our control in the world today. The Middle East endless wars have destroyed this country from the inside out. Trillions and trillions of dollars evaporated in the form of toxic ash and blood stained villages. On the home front the latently corrupt illegitimate Supreme Court has openly and brazenly flaunted bribery for court rulings. This had very clearly been the case for decades but the evidence to support it has finally surfaced. This is how we got to Corporations with unlimited purchasing power over our government, with virtual citizenship but void of human accountability. The cracks on the surface aren’t only visible they’re splitting wide open before our very eyes. We may in fact be paralyzed to act as a result of overt control of the citizens who think they’re free but planet Earth gives no fucks about that. She is speaking out loudly and clearly right now.

Yes, many problems on multiple levels for sure. And to add to the list you articulated above, a quickly changing cultural demographic has been taking place which is driving these culture wars against minority groups and inciting 21st century American nativism. It’s why most gerrymandering is done by Republican run states that are trying to hold on to their electoral power by squashing the voices of American citizens of color in their states by any means necessary. Nothing happens without a reason.

That’s true too, nativism is another beaten drum at the moment. However, not by actual Native Americans, the only people who can truly and rightfully claim such a thing. It’s just another dogwhistle tactic from a right wing that has absolutely no political platform whatsoever. Zero. You can’t convince people that a demagogue like Trump is con when the entire political party itself is a con too. Not to say Democrats aren’t also toeing that line of fraudulent ideology but they make concessions the other won’t.
The fact of the matter is is that America is a fraud on many fronts and people are trying to confront that and deny it at the same time. There is no such thing as “democracy” if gerrymandering exists. There is no such thing as democracy if the electoral process eliminates and discourages actual participation. There is no democracy if rather than a live tally of the votes being on display on election night like in the country of Brazil (where over 90% of the population votes) instead are counted in secret rooms by secret people in every county of this country. It’s a fraud, it’s always been fraudulent and is only maintained through propaganda and delusion. That’s why there is such a disconnect by design.

Another mass shooting in Jacksonville, FL by a gunman who was targeting African Americans. First, he tried at a historically black university, then went to a nearby Dollar General store and shot 3 people then killed himself. That's over 470 mass shootings in America, just this year alone through August. But let's just keep doubling down on stupid to allow access for darn near anybody to openly carry firearms in public. www.cnn.com/2023/08/27/us/jacksonville-florida-shooting-sunday/index.html

Even though I am stern supporter of universal background checks and firmly against conceal carry laws I also know at this point in history it will not stop all sociopaths hemorrhaging their sadistic delusions. Even so these protections would still deter a fair portion of these crimes and to nothing is not just insanity, it is consent.
Do Americans ever consider that this phenomenon DOES NOT EXIST anywhere else on the planet? Or does the dichotomy of US media keep them pinging back and forth between consent of insanity?
America is sick and falling fast.

I agree and the fact that this doesn't happen anywhere else on earth should be further evidence that something is deeply wrong with the way American politicians think about and have approached this issue.

I promise you history will look back at all of these weirdo fucks accordingly. And I don’t mean me. He is a historically prime example of corruption of power. The reason corruption of this magnitude has flagrantly taken hold of Washington because of the schizophrenic dichotomy media that plays tit for tat game with the public’s mind. Point out the latent corruption of Trump and co (which is historically corrupt on an unparalleled level) and the “right wing” media will make their news cycle about Hunter Biden’s corruption. Now it becomes a shouting game between manipulated sheep.

I love the scene in the last Borat film where they show dirty old man Guiliani lying down on the bed thinking the young women interviewing him wanted to get it on.
Dirty dirty old man.

Now it becomes a shouting game between manipulated sheep. It's pretty sad to think his rise to power and fame came because of 9/11. So much could've been avoided had that not happened...

They simply don't care. The NRA pays extremely well and people like to own guns and feel empowered by them. Reason is out the window.

True but what’s also interesting to me about Americans is we will point to the latent corruption of money that dictates what politicians (and private entities) will do, shamelessly but won’t make the connection to the 19th century criticism of capitalism. That criticism essentially says that on a long enough timeline capitalism will cannibalize itself. When politicians are simply bought off by private entities to work in the favor of the highest bidder, and the people openly know this, that is the actualization of that prescient critique.

Because nobody, especially politicians wants that scary boogeyman label placed on them—SOCIALIST! But when natural catastrophes hit their states they have their hands out waiting for government assistance. It’s one of the biggest hypocritical acts there ever was. And these politicians just hurt their own constituents in the process because they’re too drunk on that kool aid too.
